What an AI-generated FAQ gets wrong — and how to fix it

Here’s a pattern that shows up constantly with AI-generated FAQs: ten questions, looks complete, but the first support message from a new user is about something not covered anywhere in it.

What’s typically there: “What is [Product]?” “How do I get started?” “What are the main features?” Every question something a user would never actually type into a search bar. The FAQ was written from the product description, not from the support inbox.

That’s the failure mode. The AI reads what the product is and generates questions a reasonable person might ask about a product like this. But the people asking questions aren’t reasonable, curious observers. They’re confused about something specific. And the specifics are never in the product description.

The question that keeps arriving in inboxes is something like: “I already have my data in [another tool] — do I need to migrate everything or can I connect it directly?” That question doesn’t appear in any product description. It comes from someone who has done something before and is worried about having to undo it. The AI has never met that person.

The actual answer to that migration question is: you don’t need to migrate anything upfront. You connect your existing source and the data comes through automatically. You can run both in parallel until you’re ready.

That answer takes about fifteen seconds to say. It’s not in the FAQ because the AI didn’t know the question existed.

Why it matters more than it looks like

A FAQ that doesn’t answer real questions isn’t neutral. It’s actively expensive.

Someone lands on the page, reads through ten questions that don’t apply to them, and either writes a support message or leaves. The support message takes time to answer. The person who leaves may not come back. Either way the FAQ made things worse than no FAQ at all would have.

The other cost is subtler: a FAQ full of non-answers makes the product look like it has something to hide. “We take security seriously and use industry-standard practices” sounds like a company that doesn’t want to say what its security practices actually are. Even if the security is fine, that sentence creates doubt.

What to replace and how

The AI-generated questions tend to fall into a few categories, all of them wrong.

The “What is X?” question. Nobody reads a FAQ to find out what the product is. They read a FAQ because they’re already considering it and something is blocking them. Replace it with the blocking question your most common confused prospect actually has.

“Remove ‘What is Clearform’ — replace it with the question I get asked most on sales calls, which is whether it connects to Google Sheets without a migration.”

The reassurance answer with no content. “Getting started is easy.” “We take security seriously.” “Our support team is here to help.” These say nothing. Replace them with the specific thing.

“The security answer says ‘industry-standard practices’ — replace that with what we actually do: TLS in transit, AES-256 at rest, no third-party data sharing, SOC 2 Type I completed last year.”

The hedged timeline. “You’ll be up and running in no time” means the person writing the FAQ didn’t know the actual setup time. Find out what it is and say it.

“The onboarding answer says ‘in no time’ — replace that with ‘most teams are live within a day, and you need your API key and admin access to get started.’”

What you can’t delegate

The AI can give you structure. It’ll produce the right number of questions, format them consistently, write something that looks like an FAQ at a glance. That part is genuinely useful.

What it can’t do is tell you which questions are real. It doesn’t have your support inbox. It doesn’t know what the confused prospect said on last Thursday’s demo call. It doesn’t know what the three one-star reviews were actually about.

You have to put those back in yourself. The AI draft is a starting point for a FAQ, not a finished one — and the gap between the two is exactly the gap between the questions it imagined and the questions your users actually have.

When a FAQ is fixed this way, something shifts: people who would have emailed start citing the FAQ in their message instead — “I saw on your FAQ that I can connect directly, but I wanted to confirm.” That’s what a FAQ is supposed to do.
